Macbook Air practical experience – First day

So yes, I bought it in a flash yesterday,
Thanks to ploplo and his excellent advice: “Follow your compulsive instinct my friend, don’t try to resist the Force !”
And also thanks to Pascal and his excellent research job on-the-fly. In one word, a great teamwork.
Should I repeat that configuring a Mac has nothing to do with the Windows counterpart. In less than 2 hours I had a fully functional laptop (incl.multimedia, blogs, …) with all my accounts pre-set. I also finally purchased a .Mac account, essentially for synchronizing bookmarks but also for using more systematically the iDisk. More on that later.
SO, let’s begin with the first impressions.
I was a little afraid yesterday as I found the fans would kick out very quickly and remain at 6000 rpm. This is quite loud. Actually, after a full day, this was probably due to all the background tasks launched by the installation procedures (Leopard, Spotlight, Flock and co) because under normal surfing or powerpointing conditions, it stays at a quiet nearly inaudible 2500 rpm. One thing is sure, if you do heavy cpu work, you won’t avoid the fans. But ok, it was to be expected.
NOW, a summary after one day
- Overall satisfaction – VERY HIGH
- This is one unbelievable thing to hold in your hands, you really need to touch it.
- The screen is gorgeous, much better than my Macbook Pro
- The keyboard is different and feels nice. I tend to prefer it also to the Macbook Pro’s
- It is by no means slow and you never really feel like this is a scaled down machine but this is also a fresh install.
- The battery autonomy seems in line with what is announced. Shut down every service with minimal light and it will hold 5 hours. Put it under normal conditions and it will likely hold for 3 and 1/2 hours.
So, this computer is certainly not for everyone but nearly fit perfectly to my needs. I can also tell you that I made a lot of jealous people today at the Brussels office ![]()
